What Is Occupational Therapy (OT)?

Occupational Therapy Dungannon County Tyrone

Occupational therapy (OT) is an allied health profession that involves the therapeutic use of everyday meaningful activities, or occupations, to overcome the physical, psychological, developmental, and emotional barrier’s that impact a person's ability to realise their full potential.

Depending on the age and stage of the child, adolescent, adult or group I am supporting, I will draw on a range of theoretical frameworks, models and approaches as well as on years of therapeutic experience to formulate a Therapeutic Plan.  This will always be a collaborative exercise with the client at the centre of the process .

The occupation of a child is PLAY. With children the use of a play based Sensory Integration approach will be key. I refer to this as ‘Sensory Play’.

You can learn more about a child in one hour of play than you can in one year of conversation.

When a child is born with a healthy foundational level of neurological development and has their need for love, attention, nutrition, stimulation and rest provided for consistently by attuned and available parents or carers, all of the elements are there for healthy development.

As the baby grows and is provided the space to explore in a safe and supported environment, the art of play becomes easy and fun. In these situations, neurological, emotional, cognitive, social and academic development is effortless.

Play is our brain’s favourite way of learning.
